Come join us for a day of practical and useful learning with a hands-on workshop on raising Pasture-Raised Broilers and Laying Hens.


Join Jeff Mattocks, of the Fertrell Company, Mike Badger, current APPPA President, and Chris Caserta, farmer of Walpole Valley Farms for this great workshop. This seminar will be limited in size to maximize learning potential, so be sure to reserve early.

Chicken Harvesting

Hands-on instruction and learning of harvesting chickens. Chris & Dan will give live demonstrations on the proper method of bleeding, scalding, plucking, eviscerating, and cleaning chickens. You will then do some yourself (if desired).


We will also cover proper knife selection for each process and packaging.


Hands-on instruction of cutting up chicken into parts & packaging, proper bag selection, vacuum-sealing, and labeling requirements.

Poultry Management

Chris Caserta will lead a farm tour of the poultry operation currently in process. He will then show how daily movements of "chicken tractors" & the "eggmobile" are done. How we do it, why we do it and more.


We will discuss pen design, movement techniques, space requirements, feeder space and design, watering, and more. Plenty of time for Q&A with Jeff and Chris.


Brooding Chicks. We will discuss the necessary requirements of brooding chicks. Temperature, space, water, feed, grit, and more.

Chris Caserta has been raising pasture-raised poultry on his farm in Walpole, NH since 2006. The family raises 400 layers, 150 turkeys and 2400 broilers.

Poultry Nutrition

In-depth discussion by Jeff Mattocks of the nutritional requirements of pasturing broilers and laying hens. Get the most out of your flock by allowing them to pasture. Jeff will discuss what to watch for and ways to maximize your growth rates on pasture.


We will discuss grain type and feed requirements, and more about the health and benefits to the birds. A discussion on pasture-raised broiler and egg pricing will follow.


Jeff Mattocks, animal nutritionist at Fertrell, has formulated grain rations and feed requirements for pasture-raised poultry and livestock since 1996.
